I'm planning to paint my black colored Bass black, but I don't know where to start. Where can I get someone to paint it? What are the steps they will be taking to paint it? What will I have to do? How long will it take? How much would it cost? Will they have to remove anything?Painting a black bass guitar? Need tips and advice?
Man, trust me, you'll regret it. It's a long process that takes like three months.
You have to sand everything down to the wood. If, during the sanding stage, they sand through the grain pattern, it'll be impossible to get a natural wood finish. Solid colors are easier, but by no means.quicker. Basically it's a long process of spraying a coat on one side, letting it cure for three days, then spraying the other side and letting it cure for three days. One coat of paint after another on one side and then the next. Then you have to lacquer it and that takes months to cure. It's tedious and if you don't have a backup instrument that's three or four months where you can't play your instrument.
Then you have the costs. It isn't cheap. I paid $200 for a guitar. It's not as expensive as buying a brand new white bass, but believe me, halfway through it you'll wish you had.
My advice? Either learn to love your black bass, or save up to buy a new white one. Or, alternately, buy a new bass body that is painted white and just mount everything that is on your black bass (the neck, the pickups) onto the new body. That's easy enough with Fenders, or with a bass that has a bolt-on neck, plus it's a lot quicker. It's not cheaper, but it's quicker. Just go to a website like warmoth.com and find your model of bass.
