here is a site so you can see a out door tortoise enclosure, www.slowcoach.org, it has a newly built outside pen so you can get an idea of how it could look also in the tortoise trust news letter (number 6) it has an article on out door housing you can find it at www.tortoisetrust.org, my out door enclosure has a hut to escape the sun an area that has smooth flat stones, the tortoise like to bask in this area, it also has an area that has natural tortoise food growing in so they can graze at will, i have a lawn area and a long grass area, the water area should be a shallow dish just a bit bigger than your tortoise and only deep enough so your tortoise can get in and out with ease and no deeper than up to your tortoises chin, it depends on what space you have and how you want it to look, a soil area tortoises really love, but what ever pen you decide on it needs to be secure and remember to bury some wire so your tortoise can not dog out of the pen, mine has paving slabs as a base and the earth placed on top so the tortoises can have a good dig but can not dig out, horsefeild are excellent diggers, hope you find what you are looking for best of luck.I'm building an outdoor pen for my russian tortoise. what should I put in it? any tips and advice for me? :)
If a Russian tortoise is anything like my Eastern Longneck (Australian), mine just loves to sleep in grass cuttings/compost. I put a pile of compost and grass in his cage and he buries himself in it to sleep, he just loves it! :o)I'm building an outdoor pen for my russian tortoise. what should I put in it? any tips and advice for me? :)
You need to provide areas with shade, water and a place to burrow down into the soil. A small doghouse is a good choice or a couple of large flowerpots turned onto their side.
Here's an edible plant list for landscaping ideas...
