Delhi-Shimla by road, tips, advice?

We will soon (in June) be travelling from Delhi to Shimla by road in a car. Although it would be a travel agency car with driver, I would like to know and learn from the experiences of anyone who has travelled on this stretch.

Kindly share your experiences, with your suggestions about the total expected journey time, the best time to leave Delhi in the morning, road conditions, traffic jams, etc.

Most importantly, please advise on where to stop and where to eat. This is important to me as small children are also travelling with us. Thanks.Delhi-Shimla by road, tips, advice?

Road Trips

Indian Highways have been notorious in the past, for the no. of accidents that used to happen on them. I would not say that have improved a lot but there has been a marginal improvement in terms of the quality of the roads, the quality of traffic i am still unsure about. So if you are a foreigner to India and not very adventerous, my advice to you would be ';Don't try to get behind the wheel on the highway';.

Click to inlargeBut, you can always travel with someone who knows his way around these places. I personally prefer to drive to a destination which is within 500 kms of my hometown and believe me

INDIA IS BEST WITNESSED ON THE ROADS, the kind of colour and variety you see on the indian roads is uncomparable to anywhere else in the world. So if you meet a good driver with a well maintained car i would advice to take a road trip in India even if it is for a short distance of 100kms.

Some roadtrips you can make around delhi

Jaipur 250kms

Agra 190kms

Dehradun 280kms (via haridwar or via GT road and Yamunagar)

Mussorie 40kms from dehradun

Mcleodganj 500kms (approx. depending on the route)

Amritsar 450kms

Wagah Border 30kms from Amristar

Shimla 300kms

All distances are approximated and the time to reach depends on the road conditions and your driving average speed.

After this instance, I called her twice to know her feelings about me. Friends, she is crazy. She asked me for my next visit to Silchar. She surrendered herself. Now, I have returned to my home and will stay till first week of July. I have stopped calling her. I have stopped talking her. In one hand I have a sweet family which I admire most, and on the other I have a love knocking at the door. I have faced the same state of affairs many times before. What I simply do is, I come back to my family. I never cross the limitations of any relationship. My Ethics does not allow me to go with anybody. My Ethics does not allow me to play with the emotions of anybody. My Ethics does not allow me to disregard the cultural values of our mother The Great India.

Hope you enjoyed reading my travelogue.Delhi-Shimla by road, tips, advice?
Yes once I have travelled by car from Delhi to Simla by self driving .There is absolutely no problem

1. Delhi to Chandigarh --400 km vis GT Road ,Ambala ,Zirakpur,Chandigarh-and Chandi garh to Simla (90 km ) via timber trail resort (you must see this resort and stay one night) .This 90 km takes nearly 5 hrs to climb due to steep climb .Just move on 2nd gear .
You are really gong to enjoy this trip and its good that you have a driver....My idea of enjoying a road trip is to enjoy local stuff, which you don't find in your neighborhood.Try to explore new dhabas on the side of the road and do some local shopping....make sure you take a lot of pictures...It is a beautiful drive...Try to eat light, otherwise you might get car sick...
Well you don't need to worry about the Chandigarh to Shimla stretch because you would be going with a professional driver who should not face much problem in the hilly terrain. It should take you approximately 5 hrs or less to reach uptil Chandigarh and another 3 to 3.5 hrs to reach Shimla from there. Since you would be travelling with young children I recommend you instruct the driver beforehand to drive at a moderate speed once you hit the hills so that you people don\t suffer motion sickness. If anybody is susceptible to motion sickness then on reaching Chandigarh he/she should take a tablet for motion sickness (Avomine, Cinnarizine etc.)

Keeping in mind the children break the journey into three legs. Stop for lunch/Meal at Chandigarh. Since you would not be entering the city and using the bypass, you can probably stop at The Red Bishop Tourist complex which is at the outskirts of Panchkula (near the main road). Take the next break in journey for tea at a place known as Kiari Bungalow which comes just after Kandaghat.

Try and leave Delhi early in the morning to escape the heat. Avoid night travel as drivers tend to get rash (and sleepy) on the GT Road at night.

Roads are smooth and excellent, but very winding from Kalka onwards.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your stay.Go off the usual tracks and take long walks to enjoy Shimla otherwise it will seem like just another congested city. (Do seek out and walk along the Forest Road on one late afternoon and try and see the walk uptil Glenn and the Viceregal Lodge)
