Periodically doing a temp file cleanup (if windows, go to program files, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup - I do not compress files, but select all the folders with 'temp' in them).
After you've done this, then do a Defrag - also found in System Tools.
I usually do this about once a month or so.
The NTFS file system is great and utilizes hard drive space more effeciently, however, Windows is still very sloppy about how it writes files to the hard drive. Bits and pieces of files get scattered all over the drive, temp files clog up free space, etc.
Over time, the little arm on the hard drive has to work extra extra hard to open up programs and files, reaching back and forth, back and forth, gathering the little fragments of files in order to load them up. Over time, this also increases chances of file corruption. How to keep my hard disk healthy? Any tips? Advice?
Install/run CCleaner once in a while.
Run disc cleanup.
Run defragementer once in a month.
Install antivirus/security suite.
Check the disc for errors once in 3 months.
